As a senior, you might not see how social media fits into your life. However, various platforms can definite have a practical use. Perhaps your family has already convinced you to use Facebook to keep up with family news and see pictures of your loved ones. But have you considered using Twitter? It's not just a place to let the world know what you're thinking. It's also a great site for easily getting information that's relevant to you. There are many organizations on Twitter that share beneficial tidbits and news for older ones.
First, though, you would need to set up an account. When you go to Twitter.com, you'll see a "signup" button on the top right. You'll type in your name, email or phone number, and choose a password, and you're ready to go. Once you're set up, you'll create a unique username to identify you.
Twitter will give you some suggestions on which accounts to 'follow'. Following an account means that when you sign into Twitter, you'll get a news feed of what these accounts have 'tweeted'. You don't have to follow the accounts they suggest if you choose not to. They'll also be a search bar for you to type in names of people or organizations you want to follow.
@AARP is an excellent choice. They tweet information on a variety of subjects from retirement to passing on family heirlooms. By following @CaringSrService, you and your family can get similar information. Some of our recent tweets were about emotional well-being, workplaces that embrace seniors, and healthy eating tips. You might find other accounts you want to follow. And maybe you'll write some tweets of your own!
